Whether we like it or not, Wooden Sheds have been the go-to storage structure for many green-fingered gardeners over the years. But, we’re about to blow the Wooden versus Metal Sheds debate wide open.

We can only assume that Wooden Sheds became the traditional garden storage solution of choice because, well, once upon a time pretty much every structure was made from wood. Then this thing called the Industrial Revolution happened and everyone went metal-mad.

Yet, still, over the course of the last century at least, many people have still opted for Wooden Sheds instead of Metal Sheds.

Wooden vs. Metal Sheds: Which Should You Choose?

A Metal Shed, of course! And we’re not just saying that because we’re biased. We probably are, ever so slightly. But, our bias is based on cold-hard facts and strong evidence to suggest that Metal Sheds are a far superior storage solution to their Wooden competitors.

Without any further ado, here are eight reasons why you should choose a Metal Shed over a Wooden one:

1) Unrivalled Security

Without a shadow of a doubt, Metal Sheds offer unrivalled security compared to wooden counterparts. Like all of our Steel Buildings, our Sheds are made from high-grade cold-rolled steel. They’re virtually indestructible. We even use hydraulic rams (yes, you read that right!) as part of our R&D process – so we can absolutely vouch for their integrity and security credentials.

The same, unfortunately, can’t be said for Wooden Sheds. Even a terrible burglar will get into a Wooden Shed with relative ease, using a bit of elbow grease and a hacksaw bought from Homebase.

2) Extreme Durability

If you look at it logically, the fact of the matter is that metal is far more durable than wood. For one, wood is extremely flammable, especially if it’s covered in varnish or paint with a high flammable chemical content. Metal Sheds from Tor Steel Buildings are fire resistant, as well as rust resistant – so you can rest assured whatever you store inside them will be sheltered from pretty much anything.

3) Low Maintenance

Unlike Wooden Sheds, Metal Sheds require little-to-no maintenance. Wooden Sheds, for example, will require regular painting with weatherproof paint. They may also require you to invest in additional weatherproofing measures, such as new felt roofing. Even with a wood like treated timber, it’s susceptible to rot and woodworm, and is unlikely to last for even a fraction of the length of time as Steel.

4) Better for the Environment

As the name suggests, Wooden Sheds are obviously made by chopping down trees, which in turn become treated timber.

The cold-rolled galvanised steel used to make our Metal Sheds provide a far-superior strength-to-weight ratio, meaning the quantity of steel required to manufacture them is drastically reduced. In turn, less energy and fuel is used during the smelting and transportation of the steel.

5) Easy Assembly

We’ve previously likened Steel Structures to those famous little bricks, Lego, on our blog. And that’s because Steel Sheds can be pieced together – just like Lego – by someone with no prior building knowledge. On the contrary, Wooden Sheds often require a professional builder, carpenter or handyman to erect.

However, for a completely hassle-free assembly, we do offer a ‘Supply & Build’ option if preferred – meaning you won’t have to get your hands dirty at all.

6) Easily Expandable

Following on from the Lego analogy above, Metal Sheds can be easily expanded and extended. Their modular design means that, if you need more storage space in the future, you can add to your existing steel structure with relative ease. The same, unfortunately, can’t be said for a Wooden Shed.

7) Long-Term Lower Costs

While some Wooden Sheds will undoubtedly be cheaper to buy initially, in the long-term you’ll end up spending a lot more than you bargained for. Regularly maintenance alone for a Wooden Shed could end up costing you a pretty penny. Then when you factor in the shelf-life of a Wooden Shed, you’ll more than likely have to fork out for a replacement within a decade or so.

8) Get the Best of Both Worlds

If you’re tempted by the natural look of a Wooden Shed, why not get a superior quality Metal Shed and clad it in timber, for example? Doing so, you get that look you’re desperately seeking to complement your garden – without compromising on key factors like security.
